OpenMarket – April 3, 2019
After a lot of hype and a lot of anticipation, RCS Business Messaging has finally arrived – for every business.
Over the past year, a group of leading brands has been testing out OpenMarket’s RCS Business Messaging API beta – with some amazing success.
But now the OpenMarket RCS API is available on general release – so organizations everywhere can deliver image-rich, app-like mobile messages to their customers.
(For information about our RCS API, and RCS in general, visit our new RCS messaging page and content hub.)
Starting out with new RCS technology
When a new communication technology emerges, businesses – quite rightly – tend to sit back and wait for widespread adoption before they plough money into it. You can imagine that few companies wanted to invest in a fax soon after its invention.
But RCS doesn’t have that timing and rollout issue. Almost everyone already has a mobile phone nowadays. And almost everyone knows how to text. It’s true that not every phone is RCS compatible yet. But our RCS API ensures every message sent to an incompatible phone reverts to an SMS format.
An RCS rollout
Businesses that already use SMS messaging simply need to design both RCS messages and SMS messages – then leave it to us to sort out which customer gets which.
It couldn’t be more simple to get started.
In the meantime, RCS adoption is gathering pace. The major mobile operators have thrown their support behind it, and Android phone manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Google and Huawei support RCS. So if you take into account the usual two-year renewal cycle of smartphones, the vast majority of phones will soon be RCS compatible. If Apple gets on board with RCS (as is rumoured) almost all smartphones will end up with it. That’s why big brands are lining up to get involved.
